By nature traumatic events are intense, severe, harsh, shocking, powerful, abrupt, merciless, frightening, threatening, devastating, numbing, and injurious. It is natural to get caught off guard in the event of a traumatic event whether natural or man made. In general, such an event can cause an enormous amount of anxiety. People respond to their anxiety differently. Some fight, some flee, and others freeze. Any of such reactions could have debilitating short-term or long-term effects. Yet, there is a fourth group, resilient people, who bounce back and survive the traumatic event without much suffering. Resilient individuals and families possess certain traits that help them encounter and cope with the natural or man made disastrous events. These individuals have developed certain skills that help them be more resourceful in a traumatic event. They hold specific organizational patterns that enable them to sail through the traumatic event. Resilient individuals have a unique style of communication and interpersonal skills that empower them to express their needs and get them met during the traumatic event. The presenter will share some characteristics, communication and coping mechanisms, interpersonal skills, and d organizational patterns of these resilient individuals and families. It is natural to give in to negative automatic thoughts that pop in one’s mind in the event of a devastating trauma. Resilient individuals hold a certain belief system that empowers them to change the negative automatic thoughts into positive thoughts when faced with trauma. Case examples will be shared to show how resilient family members have survived traumatic events and their belief system promoted positive thoughts which helped them through the rugged terrain of their trauma. In conclusion, using creative interventions, the negative automatic thoughts can be changed into positive empowering thoughts, mantras, which promote the strengths and resources of suffering family members. Emergence of positive thoughts will release the individuals’ creativity and sense of humor, empowering them to cope effectively and appropriately with the impact of a natural or man made disastrous event.
