The paper is a presentation of a three-year national developmental project (2002-2004). The experience is that there have been focus on, and efforts to help the disabled child, but less focus and help to the whole family, including the couple relationship and the siblings. The research background is a qualitative project involving 17 couples with a disabled child at home. Each couple was interviewed 4-6 times trough 1-2 years, each interview 2-3 hours. The main focus was on family life and the couple’s relationship. The Ministry of Children and Families initiated and financed the project (NOK 4,5 mill each year). It is organized with a national base at Samlivssenteret, and with five regional teams. The intention is to increase competence and cooperation among professionals involved, and establish couple workshops for parents with disabled children. The project organizes continuing education for family therapists and other health professionals about families with disabled children and support them in building networks. For the parents the project develops, implements and evaluates two formats of workshops (one-day and week-end) focusing on couple relationship and sharing experiences, and helps establish local infrastructure all over Norway initiating these workshops. The project is evaluated continually. The results so far will be presented.
