During the past decades, qualitative research methods rooted in the hermeneutic epistemological tradition, like Discourse Analysis (DA) have been argued as ‘promising’ for the study of systemic/family therapy. In this presentation I will discuss their potential for systemic/family therapy research by drawing examples from up-to-date DA studies of family therapy, reviewed on methodological grounds. I will argue that despite a number of methodological flaws in the reviewed studies, DA methods can have potential for the study of therapeutic dialogue in situ. First, they can be suitable for the pursuing of research questions, which aim at exploring theoretical concepts and therapy techniques in the actual context of the here and now of the therapeutic dialogue. Second, they can shed light to the micro-detail of therapist and family members’ discursive transactions on a turn-to-turn basis, thus offering a ‘systemic’ way for studying the therapeutic dialogue. Third, they can add to a critical appraisal of clinical practice in relation to macro-social issues by methodologically allowing for a scrutiny of the therapist’s dialogic contributions. Fourth, they can potentially add to bridging the gap between research and clinical practice by offering systematic ways to enhance therapist reflexivity. Finally, they are possibly more ‘accessible’ by systemic family therapists, due to shared epistemological and theoretical presumptions between DA traditions and systemic/constructionist therapeutic approaches. In conclusion, I will argue for a critical deployment of DA methods and for the further pursuing of their potential in systemic/family therapy research.
