Despite the demonstrated value of embracing a flexible and integrative approach to clinical work, the field has yet to provide a framework through which family therapists can be trained to appropriately choose theories and techniques that best fit the unique circumstances of each client family. This is of particular importance in the field of multicultural family therapy when we are often working with multiple beliefs within any given system and context.
The workshop will provide a process to help guide the supervisor and the clinician toward an inclusive “both/and” approach, providing for both a cohesive framework to conceptualize the case and the flexibility to incorporate a multiple theories and techniques in a meaningful and organized fashion. This framework is primarily focused on the creation of therapeutic alliance through matching theory to client variables.
The premise for this framework is based in common factors research which suggest that the variance in clinical outcomes are attributed to 1) client and external factors, 2) client-therapist rapport, 3) theoretical model, and 4) hope and expectancy. In this presentation we will discuss the therapist’s ability to influence both the therapeutic alliance and hope and expectancy through the careful choice of model or combination of models.
