The Yucelmethod is a method which can be used in family therapy. The client is an expert of his own life. In his or her stories certain events and actions are linked into a meaningful whole. In the Yucel method the helper helps a client to make a visual representation of his or her life situation by using blocks. The representation is constructed in three types of blocks. The person / family / system is represented by a bar. The bar is held up by supporting factors (T-shaped blocks under the bar) and bears the weight of problems and sorrows (square blocks piled upon the bar). The representation of the life situation is build in three stages: The initial situation, the desired end state and the intermediate stages. The helper makes a picture of every construction. By building a representation of his or her life situation, the client ‘externalises’ problems and sorrows which lessens resistance to talk about them. Talking about the nature of problems and the possibilities of solutions the client gets a view of his or her own development. He sees, hears and feels when and how the blocks and the construction as a whole change and adapt. While building the construction the client notices that he has a certain influence on his situation, he experiences self control. This feeling ensures safety and awareness and understanding of the treatment process. It usually brings about an increase in motivation.
