In this interactive workshop I will introduce the development of an innovative therapeutic tool and its clinical use in my consultation as a psychologist and family therapist in the child psychiatry consultation of a public hospital. This creative psychotherapy, using sewing buttons to construct and visualize family constellations, is amongst others in line with the concept of »floating objects» (Philippe Caillé; Yveline Rey), the genogram (Murray Bowen et al.) and the family sculpture (Luigi Onnis). Each person creates her personal metaphors by choosing sewing buttons for the family members, describes through the visual and tangible aspects of the buttons the experienced characteristics of the relatives and finally places the buttons on a board defining the family space. These personal constellations allow working on individual and family histories, proximity and distance as well as temporality, with the constellations of the past, present and future. Thus the family experiences association, exchange, meta-communication and experimentation leading to new perspectives and potential changes. The therapeutic tool can be used with adults (individuals or couples) and families with children (from 5 years on). It is also a valuable technique for psychodynamic diagnosis and for clinical or institutional supervision. I will present some case studies and the participants of the workshop are invited to present situations to be discussed with the “button-tool.
