After researching strengths and weaknesses of state child protection agencies in Istanbul that work with street children, Drs. Figen Karadayi and Ozden Bademci of Maltepe University created a more fluid and client directed program: Together with Children. They will present a range of strategies that they use to engage boys ages 11-17 in different phases of state care, including peer-based interventions and art, photography, music, and theatre, as well as briefly describe SOYAC (Maltepe University Research and Application Centre for Street Children), the only center at a university to study issues facing street children. For over ten years Dr. Janine Roberts has done collaborative family therapy trainings with two NGOs in Mexico and Ecuador that work systemically with street children, their families, and schools. Key elements of these trainings will be demonstrated including working from challenges and needs of staff back to theory, participation of directors and other administrators, staff and clients as experts, “on the spot” creation of trainings together, and learning experiential and action techniques from the inside out. Throughout there will be dialogue back and forth between the presenters and audience about how cultural, political, and organizational contexts affect programs for street children, as well as brainstorming about other creative elements that need to be incorporated into this work.
