Family sculpting is a well known and respected family therapy intervention (Omnis, L., et. al., 1994; Andolfi, M., 1979; Satir, V., 1972). Practicing in a higher acuity, training hospital for children and adolescents provides many opportunities and challenges for family therapy: lengths of stays are short, pressure to medicate and release is high. The urgency is two-fold involving the family “crisis” as well as the treatment context. We have been sculpting with a team approach: psychiatrists, family therapists, and multidisciplinary trainees. Members of the treatment team are sculpted by members of the family into two sculptures: the “crisis sculpt” and the “preferred sculpt”. This allows families to observe their interpersonal relationships and visualize the potential for change. Family members assume then their own place in the sculpts and physically experience moving out of the “crisis”. The intervention provides an immediate picture of family dynamics so that we can better match our rapid treatment response to the family’s needs. Trainees physically join the family tension, rather than just being a witness to families in crisis: this powerful experience leads to increased interest in the validity of family therapy. This is critical because family therapy is often devalued in many training programs, managed care systems, and practice environments. This workshop will include clinical videos and be interactive and experiential, making it possible to integrate into your own professional context.
