This workshop will present the application of Emotionally Focused Family Therapy with blended families. Presenters will review key developmental tasks and challenges facing remarried families and research findings informing effective treatment of these unique multidimensional family systems. The presentation will focus on the competing and conflicting attachment issues common in these complex family systems and will review the unique challenges these concerns pose to families and the therapists who assist them. Participants will learn about the complexity of the multi-level interactional cycles that can organize parental and marital conflicts and specific treatment strategies used to resolve them. EFFT interventions will be demonstrated that assist families in de-escalating negative patterns of interaction and promote more responsive and accessible patterns of emotional engagement. Case examples will be used to illustrate working with blended families across subsystems and promoting secure patterns of relating that promote both exploration and new patterns of caregiving in these developing family systems. The presentation will include video examples from EFFT treatment of a stepfamily conducted by both presenters and interactive exercises including conceptualizing blended family dynamics using an attachment perspective. Participants will: 1. Obtain an overview of the clinical challenges and opportunities of working with blended families; Identify the key role of loss in organizing blended family relationships; Gain skills in identifying the complex interactional cycles of blended families; Develop therapeutic skills in both processing attachment issues and creating new possibilities for connection in a blended family.
