This interactive session will describe Clanwilliam Institute (CWI)’s approach to the Training of Family Therapists. CWI aims to preserve, foster and develop the distinct approach of family therapy within a rapidly changing external environment. The potential benefit for the family therapy field in this approach is evident in the successful outcomes of statutory and professional accreditation and reviews undertaken by CWI. The first part of this session will focus on CWI’s distinct approach with particular reference to • Integration of the clinical services and educational functions of the institute • Integration of academic and practice components in family therapy training • Integration of Training policies and practices with the ethos, values and mission of the CWI The second part will focus on how CWI preserves its distinct theoretical, ethical and practice focus in an increasingly regulatory global environment. This can be particularly difficult where regulatory and decision-making increasingly measure usefulness in terms of standards and outcomes rather than processes. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding how we as family therapists may continue to learn and develop so as to keep pace with changing times while holding on to concepts and processes that are still prove relevant and valuable.
