During the first year of training as systemic psychotherapists at the Laboratory for the Study of Human Relations, the importance of clarifying the factors affecting the selection of a mental health professional (MHP) became apparent. This study examines the factors affecting a persons choice of MHP. Our theoretical background is based on an advanced literature review (Cabral & Smith, 2011; Johnson & Caldwell, 2011; Lipscomb, Shelley & Root, 2010) via mainly a systematic approach. Using a five-point Likert scale questionnaire, we measured the correlation between specific factors and the choice of a MHP. These factors refer to certain MHPs characteristics and include various items, such as personal traits (i.e. logical, insightful), therapeutic skills (i.e. honest, good listening skills), and identity (i.e. cultural/ethnic background). Additionally it is of great interest to examine the importance of the cost factor depending on each participants status of employment. Regarding our participants, we obtained samples both from MHP trainees in systemic psychotherapy and typical participants/non-MHP trainees or professionals so as to obtain a holistic perspective. We expect that the factors affecting trainees in choosing a MHP will differ compared to typical participants. Even though this research project is on-going, first results suggest that certain factors such as age (Teaslade &Hill,2006) and personal traits seem to have a strong statistical correlation with the MHP selection process. Further methodological research will enlighten important issues on how people choose their therapist.
