Previous research demonstrates that family life and marriage have different effects on men’s and women’s health outcomes. The present study aims to explore differences in couples’ health outcomes in the Turkish context and to inquire into the predictors of husbands’ and wives’ mental and physical well-being in a community sample of 204 families. A large battery of self-report measures was used to gather information on couples’ mental and physical health as well as a set of variables covering distal environmental, familial, dyadic and individual domains. A series of multiple regressions were conducted on husbands’ and wives’ mental and physical health scores separately. The results revealed that variables in the dyadic and the familial domains had more explanatory power relative to other domains. The results indicate that there are differences as well as commonalities between the characteristics of family and marital contexts which are conducive to couples’ mental and physical health. The implications of those findings for research on family life, marriage, gender and health are discussed.
