This study aimed to investigate how suicide attempters perceived their families and to compare the family functioning of suicide attempted and normal control subjects.
Eleven adolescent patients between the ages of 13 and 17 referred to the Marmara University Hospital, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Emergency Policlinic because of attempted suicide between January 2013 and March 2013, were included in the study. Eleven subjects were selected as control group. Adolescents were also evaluated with The Family Assesment Device and The Perceived Familial Social Support Scale. The seriousness of attempted suicide in adolescents was determined with the Suicide Intent Scale.
The mean age of suicide attempters was 15,54± 1,43 and the mean age of control’s was 15,63±1,56 years. Only communication subscores of family assesment scale significantly discriminated the two groups (p<0.05). Also perceived social support from teacher (subscale of perceived familial social support scale) was found low in adolescent attempting suicide (p<0.05).
The suicide attempt in adolescence is one of the most important public health problem, and the individuals, parents and society should be aware of this problem. Protective social support systems should be determined in the prevention of suicidal behavior in adolescent.
