The Japan Association Family Therapy (JAFT) has been founded since 1984 and steadily developing. Now we have over 1200 members including various kind of professionals; psychiatrists, social workers, clinical psychologists, court mediators, nurses, probation officers, school teachers and so forth. The process of its development and activities will be introduced briefly. Following family problems and symptoms has been treated by family therapy basis; child abuse and socially withdrawn adolescents (current hot topics in Japan), school refusals, eating disorders, borderline personality disorders, delinquencies and substance abusers, schizophrenics and depressions (family psychoeducational approaches), marital discord (divorce, love affair and sexless couples) and so forth. Furthermore I will emphasize on the socially withdrawn adolescents (HIKIKOMORI) and the phenomenon of increasing number of middle-agedmen's suicide (the largest number all over the world) from theviewpoint of current/modern social-psychological changes in Japan, especially drastic value changes in the Japanese families. Before the period of high growth of the Japanese economy, the value of education was so emphasized in each family;parents encouraged their children toenterprivileged universitiesforfuture job securities. Butin theseeconomical depression, this golden rules has changed in young-adult generationsand lost their way how to find the valuable and stable future lives. This will be one of the major causes of HIKIKOMORI phenomenon. Along with this economical changes, the traditional lifelong employment system had to be changedtoo. As a result, many business men, most of the fathers of 40-50years-old in their families, lost their secure and stable positions both in their company and their families. They feel so responsible asfathers or breadwinnersand become depressed deeply, but their families and colleagues cannot identify their symptoms because of their emotional inhibition as traditional Japanese man.Unexpectedly for their families, they commit suicide by jumping from platform into thetrain for instance. It seems like HARA-KIRI in SAMURAI period.
