Short-term therapy has a unique place among the distinct modalities that have developed as part of the growth of psychology. Binder, Strupp & Henry (1995) stated that Freud's followers along with the early psychotherapists engaged to some extent in short-term therapy. Subsequent interpersonal and cognitive therapists were more focused on solutions. Currently, with the emphasis on managed care there exists a trend towards intervening with families on a short term basis or solution focused family therapy.
The current model of family therapy which is being implemented in a short- term family therapy setting will be presented along with its distinct components and phases. The conceptual framework will be discussed and analyzed, and case presentations will be shared with the audience.
The goal of solution focused family therapy is to assist the family to shift from talking about their problem to focusing on what functions well and possible solutions. The techniques of collabarating with the family, focusing on their strengths and resources, and maintaining the perspective that they have the ability and skills to resolve their problem will also be presented.,
The presentation will also take into account a multi-cultural perspective with emphasis on the Hispanic culture as compared to others
