First family therapy was inspired by cybernetic thinking (Bateson) and systemic concepts were the foundation of the development of our field. Later there was a shift to a social constructionist view and family therapy began to develop along narrative and collaborative lines. Maybe it is time for a new turn in the field, as dialogism is beginning to inspire more and more family therapist. In a dialogical conversation the therapist tries to make a connection with the family as living human beings. In conceptualizing such a dialogical encounter the ideas of John Shotter are very inspirational, as through the years he developed a vocabulary inspired by Wittgenstein and Michael Bakthin. He speaks about ‘Withness’ vs.’Aboutness’ thinking. ‘Withness thinking’ is a dynamic form of reflective interaction that involves coming into contact with another’s living being, with their utterances, with their bodily expressions, with their words. The notion of ‘withness’ adressess the criss-cross of merging and overlapping voices and their silences to in normal ordinary exchange. Tolerance of uncertainty and an appreciation of silences in therapy are essential issues to the ‘withness’ thinking in family therapy practice. In this workshop we will elaborate on the concepts ‘dialogical encounter’, ‘withness thinking’, ‘tolerance of uncertainty’ and ‘the appreciation of silence’. Using role play and experiential group exercises we will illustrate the relevance of these concepts for familytherapy.
