In this workshop, we propose to introduce the use of genograms in understanding family patterns by focusing on family life cycle. We will use the family of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkish Republic, to illustrate family and individual patterns on a genogram. The family of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, were Turkish-Muslims living in Thessaloniki, an ethnically diverse city of the Ottoman Empire, which is unique from a historical and social context. We believe this case will be an interesting presentation of the interaction between social-cultural values and family dynamics throughout the life cycle. Genograms provide a three-generational graphic picture of the family, showing its structure, demographics, relationships and important life events, and they are useful in understanding a family’s dynamics.
Throughout this workshop, we will have a presentation introducing genogram symbols, facilitate their use via an exercise, and we will discuss 7 different life cycle stages that families experience:
• Marriage and remarriage
• Transition to parenthood
• Families with adolescents
• Family at midlife
• Marriage and the next generation
• Parenthood and the next generation
• Families in later life
It is important to look at the timing for certain life transitions, stressor events, unresolved issues, and family triangles in historical and cultural context. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s family provides example of how a family deals with loss, instabilities, and remarriage and how these events affect family members, even to the next generation..
