The emergence of child abuse allegations in post-divorce couple process usually marks an escalation in levels of intra-familial conflict. Processes unfold in which the mental health of children and adults, parent-child relationships and parental relationships all suffer significant deterioration. The workshop will consider how the family therapist/mediator, in collaboration with the family courts, can work towards the containment of conflict as well as towards a level of recovery for children, adults and their necessary relationships. Workshop participants will be invited to interact with each other and the presenter as consultants to a case which illustrates both the dilemmas and challenges for professional practice in this context. It will be argued that effective practice in this area must be assessed through the twin goals of conflict management and harm reduction.
