LOOKING THROUGH A NATURAL SYSTEMS LENS: CULTURE, DIVERSITY, AND DIFFERENTIATION OF SELF OF THE THERAPIST
Home Page > Website Section Choosen > VIII. EFTA AVRUPA AİLE TERAPİSİ DERNEĞİ KONGRESİ > WORKSHOP >
During periods of crisis and change, Natural Family Systems suggests the evidence of an increased tension between the forces of individuality and togetherness. Considering general globalization and the prolonged global economic crisis, coupled with an ongoing shift in the cultural identities within communities and nations, families play a pivotal role in the management of this tension on both a micro and macro levels. Through a review of current literature this presentation will explore the role of culture, identity and survival through a Natural Family Systems lens. The family therapist’s sense of culture, identity and differentiation of self profoundly affects the therapeutic process. Natural Family Systems emphasizes the therapist’s own family of origin work that is reflected in “the ability to be in emotional contact with a difficult, emotionally charged problem, and not feel compelled to preach about what others should do” (Bowen & Kerr, 1988 p. 108). Ethical and culturally competent therapists consider how cultural factors influence the therapeutic process and therapeutic outcomes, with individuals and with families. Interactive exercises and discussion regarding diversity and culture of origin will be used to explore the roles of the family, and the family therapist, during periods of transition, crisis, or unrest.
